Practice areas
Family law matters we handle.
Each area below is a general description. Your situation and your state’s law decide what applies to you.
Divorce
A divorce ends a marriage and settles property, debts and, where there are children, parenting arrangements. Some couples agree on most points and some do not. We explain the process, the paperwork and the choices at each stage.
Child custody & visitation
Custody covers where children live and who makes decisions. Visitation covers time with the other parent. Read our child custody overview.
Child & spousal support
Support is usually based on income, the needs of children and state guidelines. We explain how the numbers are generally worked out and what can change them.
Modifications
A court order can sometimes be changed when circumstances change in a meaningful way. Until a court approves a change, the existing order stays in force.
Prenuptial & postnuptial agreements
These written agreements set out how property and support would be handled. They have formal requirements, so they are worth reviewing with a lawyer.
Adoption & guardianship
Adding a child to your family, or caring for a relative’s child, involves court steps and consents. We walk through them with you.
