FAQs
Common questions.
General answers only. They are not legal advice.
How much does a consultation cost?
Sample answer: a firm states its consultation fee, or that it is free, here. Fees for further work are explained and put in writing before work begins.
Do I need to move out before filing?
Rules differ by state and by situation. Please ask before making a big change, because moving can affect other issues such as children and property.
How long does a divorce take?
It depends on the state’s waiting rules, whether you agree on the main points and how busy the court is. A lawyer can describe what is typical where you live.
What does a judge consider in a custody case?
Courts focus on the child’s needs and what is in the child’s interest. The details differ by state. See our child custody page for a plain-language overview.
Can a custody order be changed?
Often yes, but usually only when circumstances have changed in a meaningful way and a court approves the change. Until then the current order applies.
What should I bring to a first meeting?
Any court papers you have received, existing orders, a list of questions, and basic information on income, property and debts. If you do not have everything, come anyway.
Do you offer remote consultations?
Sample answer: say here whether phone or video meetings are offered, and in which locations.
Is what I tell you confidential?
Once a lawyer agrees to represent you, conversations are generally protected. Before that, please keep the details short, and do not send sensitive information through a website form.
